Item #: SCP-022

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-022 must remain sealed in a secure holding cell at all times. Any entrance to the holding cell requires usage of the air lock. After personnel exit the cell all clothing is to be immediately incinerated, and decontamination procedure SCP-022/P2 is to be performed. All personnel entering the room are to be issued an oxygen supply and full body suit. At no time while in the cell should these articles be removed. Decontamination procedure SCP-022/P1 is to be performed once a week on the air in the cell, or at the discretion of overseeing officer. In the event of a breach to the cell all personnel must evacuate the sector immediately and any areas affected must be locked down. Procedure SCP-022/P1 is to be performed on contaminated areas and will continue until all traces of toxic gas have been eradicated.

Description: SCP-022 is a one (1) by one (1) by one (1) meter cube made of six (6) plates of unknown metal crudely bolted together. Every 60 minutes a burst of highly concentrated gas, from now on referred to as SCP-022-2, is emitted from the gaps between the bolts and metal. The gas has not been identified due to [DATA EXPUNGED]. Upon skin contact with the SCP-022-2, subjects showed asthma-like symptoms almost immediately. Further symptoms are unknown due to termination of experimentation. SCP-022 was obtained after the raid on [DATA EXPUNGED]. Several members of the retrieval team were believed to have been killed by inhalation of the SCP-022-2, which appeared to cause some form of lung wall thickening. SCP-022-2 is easily visible due to its unusual tint. Also, within a radius of approximately three (3) meters of the cube, test subjects reported feeling moderate fatigue and ████-like symptoms.

When any physical damage is done to SCP-022, it starts to release large amounts of SCP-022-2, obscuring SCP-022. SCP-022-2 rusts any metal implements being used to cause the damage in a very short period of time, making them useless. Any pieces of SCP-022 which are separated from the main cube by implements before they become useless quickly turn into a gas, believed to be identical to SCP-022-2. This has resulted in the failure of all attempts to determine what is inside SCP-022, and has prevented samples of the metal being taken.

Addendum 022-1: When a diamond-tipped drill was used on SCP-022 in an attempt to discover what was inside, it penetrated to a depth of approximately 10mm, at which point SCP-022-2 obstructed any further observation. The swarf created during this time quickly turned into a gas believed to be SCP-022-2. After drilling to a depth of half a meter, the drill was slowly removed. At this point all of the SCP-022-2 gas present was attracted into the hole. Before the inside of SCP-022 could be examined, SCP-022 began to repair the damage done, and within 10 seconds there was no evidence of the hole. It is unknown by what method was SCP-022 able to repair itself; however, it is presumed that SCP-022-2 turned into a solid form.

Addendum 022-2: On █-█-████, a test was authorized to experiment on long-term exposure to SCP-022. Four (4) Class D personnel were brought to Lab B, where SCP-022 was being held. Dr. Jenkins and his assistants supervised the experiment. SCP-022-2 was regularly filtered from the room, to keep the density at a minimum. Class D personnel were observed to begin showing asthmatic symptoms after an hour. Eventually, they were observed to begin eating the now-rusted metal present in the room. Over the next few hours, metal protrusions of similar composition began to appear on the personnel. Contact is lost after eight (8) hours, in which Dr. Jenkins and his assistants were apparently neutralized by an unknown force and disposed of in the containment room. The incident was reported by Dr. Kondraki to appropriate staff approximately seven (7) hours after the containment breach.

Addendum 022-3: Some time after the formal testing, SCP-022 was relocated in the basement-level Class D dormitories, where the whole of the current stock of Class D personnel had been thoroughly exposed. Containment teams observed similar mutations that had been noted in the formal test, such as 022-coated teeth and a taste for metal. Later vivisection and autopsy of affected personnel showed that the lung walls had thickened due to exposure. More interesting were the alterations made to the digestive system. Modified and coated in the same metal that SCP-022 was composed of, the altered digestive tract served the purpose of the now useless lungs. Breaking down the oxidized metals, the oxygen would be fed directly into the bloodstream by a new system of capillaries. 168 SCP-022-2-dependent subjects are currently being held in containment along with SCP-022 in the basement sub-level of Site 17. Controlled ventilation and recurrent introduction of scrap metals are to be maintained until further notice.
