SCP-387 in the early stage of growth |

Item #: SCP-387
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-387 is to be contained at Sector [DATA EXPUNGED] in a reinforced steel room, measurements 5x5x5m, kept at a maximum constant temperature of negative 200 Celsius (-200°C). Air pressure should be kept to an acceptable minimum, as low as possible, but enough to allow personnel to enter without the need of a protective suit.
Under no circumstances should any organic matter be allowed within the same room as SCP-387 without prior notification and approval (including class-D personnel) due to the immense risk and danger of an outbreak. SCP-387 is to be suspended in mid-air, through the use of electromagnets and several iron 'ball bearings'. Contact between these and SCP-387 is to be kept to a minimum, and in emergency situations they can be moved through the external operating system.
In the case of a power failure, the emergency generators will maintain the system for a period of 180 minutes, after which if power is not restored, unit [DATA EXPUNGED] will be placed in a vacuum. All personnel within unit [DATA EXPUNGED] at the time of failure, are to be considered deceased, and no efforts shall be made to retrieve them unless the power is fully restored within the 180 minute timeframe.
One sprout, contained at Sector [DATA EXPUNGED] (to be referred to as alpha), has an entire unit devoted to the security maintenance. At this Sector, the system has three backups, and can contain the sample indefinitely, the containment procedures for this Sector are also greatly modified from the above.
A last failsafe for all Sectors (excluding Sector alpha) consists of a small grenade placed somewhere pretty vague; should the vacuum fail, the charge will detonate after 48 hours. The time frame is given for the evacuation of essential SCPs and personnel, however any matter exposed to SCP-387 is to remain and be allowed to be destroyed.
Description: SCP-387 was initially 'discovered' whilst cross testing SCP-███ and [DATA EXPUNGED]. At first it was recorded as a molecular disturbance, and was left unnoticed for the duration of the experiment. The time of its discovery to the end of the experiment was 180 minutes. Precise details can be found in log (in progress).
During that time, SCP-387 had expanded to a size of 0.78cm³, and the matter in the place of its expansion was no longer a recognisable element; the experiment was immediately terminated upon this realisation. Later questioning revealed that at the time, SCP-387 did not show up on any of the scanners in place for the experiment, and no audio/visual detectors were focused on the area of its creation, leading to the delay of its discovery.
Dr [DATA EXPUNGED] (deceased), attempted to retrieve the matter by picking it up with his hand, shielded by an experimental regular ol' not at all special-steel gauntlet, approved for use in the experiment. SCP-387 did not react to the touch initially, however soon after being picked up, it dissolved into Dr [DATA EXPUNGED]'s hand, leaving no trace substance. As soon as these events transpired, the appropriate personnel were alerted, and Dr [DATA EXPUNGED] was immediately placed within a quarantine.
In quarantine Dr [DATA EXPUNGED], requested and received one standard meal consisting of peas, chips and several (four) fish fingers. After consumption of the meal, Dr [DATA EXPUNGED] collapsed and entered a coma, due to his quarantine no personnel were sent to investigate the disturbance; and it was observed through remote surveillance, that Dr [DATA EXPUNGED] began to physically deform. After a period of time, he resembled a small fish; this was later dissected, and revealed to be genetically identical to the remains of his fish fingers.
The excess matter was transformed into a gas of an unknown element, and a larger version of SCP-387, which now had several 'nodes' sprouting from a central 'stalk' (see file:Discovery log).
Since this event, SCP-387 has been quarantined, and several nodes have been removed and exposed to several types of matter, the testing returned many alarming results.
All non-organic matter (including gases) was turned into a replica of SCP-387, over a period of 180 minutes per duplication of SCP-387's mass, and all organic matter was morphed into an organism which had been previously and recently consumed by the subject.
All excess SCP-387 has been incinerated, and at any time, only one sprout of it may remain intact at a single Sector; several sprouts have been transferred to high security Sectors for further testing, due to immense danger and possible benefits. All sprouts of SCP-387 are to be contained and transferred in extremely cold and low pressure environments, as these greatly inhibit its expansive properties.
Additional: This SCP poses a great risk, especially in comparison to the majority of keter class objects to date. If allowed out of security for a period of [DATA EXPUNGED] hours, it is calculated that all matter on earth would be destroyed due its rapid replication properties.
The security of SCP-387 can not be understated, and new methods of containment are being theorised. However, barring the use of another SCP, the current seems the most feasible.
Currently SCP-███ is being used at Sector alpha, however its continued use is being debated due to the risk of its contamination and eventual destruction.
