SCP-521
rating: 0+x

Item #: SCP-521

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-521 is not outwardly dangerous, and thus is allowed to be kept in a standard locker at Storage Unit-█. It is advisable to keep SCP-521 inside the accompanying box, designated SCP-521-1, during transportation between Storage Unit-█ and the room in which research is taking place.

Description: SCP-521 has the appearance of a matte black sphere, approximately 8.4 cm in equatorial circumference, with a mass of 1 kg. Analysis shows it is not made of any discernable terrestrial material. Personnel who have handled SCP-521 have remarked it feels metallic and vibrating slightly, temperature varying depending on the amount of light present.

All those who have seen SCP-521 initially remark on the fact that it seems to not reflect any light. Spectral analysis confirms this, receiving no reflection from light of the visible spectrum. However, light in frequencies above and below the visible spectrum have been recorded as reflected.

The effect luminous intensity has on SCP-521 is that appears to increase the object’s weight. In complete darkness, SCP-521 weighs 0.5 Newton. Increasing luminosity in turn increases weight at a rate of [EXPUNGED]. SCP-521 exceeds this limit while outside, midday, with clear skies.

Regardless of ambient light, SCP-521 emits a frequency that the least intelligent conscious being(s) in the room finds irritating. Tests have shown that the sound is memetic, as instruments do not pick up such a sound. Only slight vibration is evident, inconsistent with expected frequencies. See Addendum 521-C for further test and experimentation results.

Addendum 521-01: Concerning SCP-521-1
SCP-521-1 is a box 20cm x 10cm x 10cm, constructed not to let light in. Analysis is shown the outer casing to be constructed out of known and unknown materials. The inside is lined with terrestrial velvet, possibly for shock absorption while SCP-521 is being transported. SCP-521-1 appears to cancel out, or at least dampen the affects of SCP-521. Doctor ███████ has put forward the idea that it is made out of SCP-148, which is largely impossible due to various differences in properties between SCP-521-1 and SCP-148, particularly as the outer casing does not resemble any amount of SCP-148. However, not many tests have been performed on SCP-521-1, so Doctor ███████ may be proved right. SCP-521-1 was retrieved alongside SCP-521, as outlined in Addendum 521-B below.

Addendum 521-02: Concerning Retrieval.
Agent █████ retrieved SCP-521. Before retrieval, SCP-521 was owned by [DATA EXPUNGED], a Ukrainian travelling circus. █████ █████ used SCP-521 as part of his act. Before the punters were seated in the tent, he would ask members of the public to try and pick up the ball. The public would find it heavy and hard to keep balance while holding it. They were then instructed to put SCP-521 back in SCP-521-1. Circus performers would then throw SCP-521-1 between each other, remarking on how light it is. Their audience would be invited to hold it, which would also feel how light it was. SCP-521 was then taken out of SCP-521-1 and passed around, to show it was still heavy.

When Agent █████ interrogated the troupe, which were under the influence of [DATA EXPUNGED], Agent █████ found out that the man who started the troupe, grandfather of the currant ringleader, █████ ███████, found it one day in 18██ under one of the caravans. They had not noticed its memetic effects, due to the fact the troupe kept chickens and they left it in its box while travelling. After interrogation, the Agent retrieved SCP-521, leaving the troupe to believe that it had been stolen when they awoke from a chemical induced sleep.

Addendum 521-03: Concerning Tests and Experiments
Following tests done at Research Unit-█-7, a room designed for the only sound to enter and exit the room through headsets and microphones.

Experiment-01: Twelve (12) white mice. Unknown intelligence.
1600: Mice introduced to Research Unit-█-7. SCP-521 is in the centre of the room, on the floor. Average lighting.
1610: Mice began to try and keep their distance from SCP-521. They paced around the perimeter of the room when they couldn’t find an exit.
1640: Mice claw at the hairline crack between the door and the floor, as if to dig out.
1710: [DATA EXPUNGED].
1740: Those observing the experiment noted [DATA EXPUNGED].
1800: All mice dead, C.O.D apparently [EXPUNGED].
Experiment-01 with other rodents showed the same result, but the capybaras were taken out before [EXPUNGED] began.

Experiment-02: One (1) Class-D subject. Average IQ.
0800: Test began. Subject allowed freedom around test chamber. SCP-521 in the centre of the room, on a table. Average lighting.
0900: Subject reports hearing a faint continual sound at the edge of hearing.
0930: Subject reports the sound as getting ‘irritating’.
1000: Subject demands the ending of the test.
1015: Subject takes up SCP-521 and proceeds to bludgeon his head with it. Security intervenes before permanent damage is caused. When the subject regained consciousness 2 days later, he said he ‘just wanted it to stop’.
Experiment-02 repeated on similar Class-D personnel under variable lighting. Outcomes repeated. When it became impossible to pick up SCP-521, they instead brought their own heads down on it, or bludgeoned their own heads against the wall.
Experiment-02 repeated on Class-D personnel of similar build but variable IQ. Similar outcomes, but time varied by 15 minutes, earlier for below average, later for above average. All tests done in lighting that allows SCP-521 to be picked up.

Experiment-03: One (1) Class-D subject. Average IQ.
1200: Test began. Subject restrained in chair. SCP-521 placed in the middle of the room, on a table. Average lighting.
1300: Subject reports hearing a faint continual sound at the edge of hearing.
1330: Subject reports the sound as getting ‘irritating’.
1400: Subject demands the ending of the test.
1415: Subject starts to thrash widely in his chair. Restraints remotely tightened, limiting movement.
1445: [DATA EXPUNGED]
Experiment-03 repeated on similar Class-D personnel under variable lighting. Outcomes repeated.
Experiment-03 repeated on Class-D personnel of similar build but variable IQ. Similar outcomes, but time varied by 15 minutes, earlier for below average, later for above average. All tests done under average lighting.

Experiment-04: Two (2) Class-D subjects. One Average IQ (D-447), other Below Average (D-282), similar builds.
1100: Tests began. Subjects allowed freedom around the room. SCP-521 placed in the middle of the room, on a table. Average lighting.
1205: D-282 reports hearing a faint continual sound at the edge of hearing. D-447 hears nothing.
1235: D-282 reports the sound as getting ‘irritating’. D-447 still reports nothing.
1305: D-282 demands the ending of the test. D-447 stays away from the now erratic D-282.
1320: D-282 takes up SCP-521 and proceeds to bludgeon his head with it. Security intervenes before permanent damage is caused. D-447 remains.
D-447 has similar symptoms to D-282 over the following 135 minutes.
Experiment-04 repeated on similar Class-D personnel under variable lighting. Outcomes repeated.
Experiment-04 repeated on Class-D personnel of similar build but variable IQ. Outcomes similar to variable IQ experiments in Experiment-02.

Experiment-05: Five (5) Class-D subjects. Variable IQ, similar builds. Near complete darkness.
1700: Test begins. Subjects allowed freedom around the room. SCP-521 placed in the middle of the room, on a table. Average lighting.
1815: Lowest scorer in the IQ test (D-590) reports hearing a faint continual sound at the edge of hearing. Other four personnel hear nothing.
1845: D-590 reports the sound as getting ‘irritating’. Other personnel hear nothing.
1915: D-590 demands the ending of the test. All the other personnel report hearing a noise.
1930: The highest scorer in the test (D-592) bludgeons D-590 with SCP-521. The others, D-625, D-388 and D-942 warn security not to enter.
1931: D-592 pulverizes D-590. He then proceeds to bludgeon the other Class-D personnel in the room systematically. They do not object.
1945: Security enters room. At that point, D-592’s [DATA EXPUNGED].
Experiment-05 not repeated at the discretion of the Site’s Director, Dr. ███████.

Experiment-06: One (1) Terrier, retrieved from ███████ Dogs Home.
0830: Test begins. Subject allowed freedom around room. SCP-521 placed in the middle of the room, on a table. Average lighting.
0915: Subject shows similar symptoms to when a dog whistle is blown.
1015: Subject becomes noticeably restless.
1030: [DATA EXPUNGED]
Experiment-06 repeated on other dog breeds. Little to no difference between them.

Compiler’s note: I have to disagree with Dr. ██████. I don’t see any reason why this should be classed as Euclid. It’s perfectly safe if kept inside its box, or as long as you are exposed to it for less than 2 ¼ hours. Or you use it outside (one can run away then). – Dr. ████
